Expand Protection for the Asian Unicorn - Saola

We are thrilled to share Rainforest Trust's recent developments in the mission to protect the Saola, often dubbed the "Asian unicorn," a rare and critically endangered species. Your generous support has been instrumental in advancing this critical conservation work.

Project Achievements

Thanks to donors like you, Rainforest Trust's Conservation Action Fund (CAF) has successfully partnered with WWF–Laos to secure the 120,632-acre Xe Sap National Protected Area. This vital habitat not only supports the elusive Saola but also provides refuge for other endangered species.

Exciting Updates:

  • Exceeding Goals: Rainforest Trust surpassed their initial goal by adding an extra 2% to the protected area.
  • National Park Status: The Laos Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has proposed upgrading the protected area to a National Park. This designation expands the park to nearly 500,000 acres, benefiting critically endangered species such as the Large-antlered Muntjac and Red-shanked Douc Langur.

Why It Matters

The Xe Sap National Protected Area is part of Rainforest Trust's broader strategy to safeguard the Annamite Mountains. This region, spanning the Laos-Vietnam border, is a biodiversity hotspot that hosts some of the world's most spectacular and threatened wildlife.

Your support helps Rainforest Trust protect these critical habitats and ensures a chance for the Saola and other endangered species to thrive.
